Chipotle's Throughput Push Drives Impressive Q4 Results, Aims for $4 Million AUVs: Chipotle's focus on improving in-store efficiency and throughput has led to impressive Q4 results, with same-store sales growth of 8.4% and transaction growth of 7.4%. The brand aims to nearly triple its annual revenue and operating profit over the next decade.
Improved Throughput Performance: Chipotle's initiative to have at least four crew members on the front line during peak periods has led to improved throughput performance, with a full point increase in the number of entrees in the peak 15 minutes in Q4.
Highest Average Unit Volumes: Chipotle achieved its highest-ever average-unit volumes in Q4, surpassing $3 million. The brand expects to reach $4 million AUVs as it continues to expand its order-ahead "Chipotlanes" and open new restaurants.
Digital Expansion: Chipotle has been strengthening its digital capabilities, improving its app features and using customer data to personalize the ordering experience. The focus on digital has led to higher incidence of add-on side items.
Operational Execution: Chipotle's efforts to improve operational execution have resulted in lower crew turnover and better staffing levels. The brand plans to continue investing in automation and robotics to further enhance efficiency and throughput.
Putting Up Stats: Chipotle opened 271 restaurants last year; 238 of the new locations included a Chipotlane drive-thru. They plan to open 285-315 new locations in 2024.
Chipotle ended 2023 with 3,437 units, and total revenue reached almost $10B. The CEO, Brian Niccol, is confident Chipotle would reach $4 million AUVs as it runs towards 7,000 locations.
